Wasn't quite sure what to expect, but this is tasty. Has a decent chipotle spicy flavor for a boullion cube. I've been adding it mainly to rice dishes. I often use part of a cube as they easily crumble and can add extra flavor just for me. My husband doesn't like overly intense flavors, so I can make a skillet of food and add chipotle only to my plate OR make mine a stronger chipotle than his. Reminds me of the flavor coating on a good chipotle or mesquite potato chip!

Sylvia's Restaurant in NYC is considered by many transplants to be the best place to grab real Southern-style chow in the city. I used to eat there when I lived in New York and I can tell you the meals she serves are pretty darned good. That's why I ordered this rub, mainly to use on the spare ribs and pork shoulders I smoke in my backyard.
This is a very good base rub. It has more of a kick than other rubs I've tried, which I like. It isn't blazing hot or anything, but the paprika and the mustard add a nice tang. The flavor is balanced but bold. It isn't a delicately-flavored spice mix, which, again, I think of as a good thing; BBQ should provide a little kick, and this rub does. You can control that zing by 1) how much rub you use (I add a lot), 2) how long you let the meat marinate with the rub (I go overnight with it) and 3) how many additional ingredients you add to the mix (I add a few).
I call this a base rub because I think adding a few things to your spice mix is a good thing. Me, I usually add to this rub some additional brown sugar and some Italian spice mix before applying to the meat. If I want something a little different, I'll add a bit of nutmeg or maybe some ground celery seed, which is something you'll find in BBQ rubs and sauces at places like Kansas City's Gates' Restaurants or the many Famous Dave's scattered throughout the Midwest. With BBQ, personalization is always a good thing. But don't feel you have to go crazy if you want to keep things simple; this rub is satisfying as is, straight out of the shaker.
I bought the pack of 12 because 1) the price is excellent (most competing rubs with this kind of flavor usually sell for at least twice the price) and 2) you'll likely use up the rub more quickly than you think. For every two racks of ribs I cook, for instance, I end up using at least two-thirds of a 5.5-ounce container. Since I cook ribs and pork shoulder pretty often, I run through this stuff fairly quickly, especially during the summer.
If you like to use rub on steak or chicken, you'll tear through your supply more quickly. If you don't use it as frequently as I do, you won't have much of a problem: Just store your rub someplace cool and dark and it'll keep a long time.
I've used a number of store-bought rubs over the years, including those from Arthur Bryant's and the aforementioned Famous Dave's (which are also very good, by the way). I can honestly say Sylvia's is one of my favorites -- not just because of the taste, but because of the bang you get for your buck.
By the way, here's a little trivia. Years ago, before I moved to NYC, I read an interview with Sylvia in Molly O'Neill's "New York Cookbook" where Sylvia said she doesn't smoke her pork ribs but just slow cooks them in an oven, using rub to add the BBQ-ey flavor. Not using smoke gets a lot of 'cue stalwarts riled up, but that's just the way her family had always fixed ribs and that's how she still fixes them today. And they're excellent. So if you catch grief from some food snob for cooking your ribs indoors without smoke, don't fret: Sylvia has your back.

They replace the sodium chloride with potassium chloride, with is arguably healthier while still being salty tasting, however they replace the free form MSG with hydrolyzed soy and corn protein, which is arguably worse then MSG and certainly contains MSG. It's against government regulations to say something has NO MSG then have hydrolyzed proteins as ingredients, but if you can get by that, the stuff tastes great!

Don't be fooled by the simple packaging of this mixed spice. This is not a simple flavor.
If you like the steaks served at a certain "Australian" styled steak house you may well like this seasoning. A friend of mine introduced it to me at a little cook out, where he rubbed a generous amount on some new york strip cuts and grilled, and I fell in love. He then told me that this was the above mentioned steak house's secret seasoning for it's steaks, him claiming to know this by having worked their for a time. I know he had worked at just about every chain restaurant at some point, but that's about all I can confirm in regards to this rumor one way or the other as I've never had a steak there, nor worked at one. Regardless of the truthfullness of that statement, I can firmly attest to fact that this is an excellent mixed spice.
I've used it on just about every type of meat except sea food, though I suspect it would be good on that too, with a noteable preformance on eggs. It is mildly spicey and fairly salty, but not overpowering unless you really load up.
Reminds me of cajun seasonings in simular packaging, but is not as "hot". I highly recommend a good cut of beef, pan fried in olive oil with a generous amount of Cavender's Greek Seasoning rubbed in.
It is also priced very well, and one container is more then enough to last a while. If you for some reason don't love it, you won't be out very much money and if you end up loving it as much as I do, you'll have plenty of it to last you a long time. A seasoning every kitchen should have!

As a spice mix fan, I make a point of trying multiple products on food - both fun and fattening in equal measure! I've also highlighted what I think are the standout mixes in Chef Tom's line: Chef Tom Douglas Rub With Love Salmon Rub and Chef Tom Douglas Rub With Love Chicken Rub.
That said, this mix is a delicious treat, but it doesn't hold the attention of the taste buds like the standouts. The primary notes are supposedly ancho chiles and smoked paprika, but overall the tastes are muddled and don't provide a 'zing' to the dish.
It's a very tasty addition on multiple items such as tri-tip and pot roast but not enough to justify the gourmet price. It is also too heavy a mix to work well on chicken, fish, or to drizzle over a meat-pasta dish.
Note: Surprisingly, the best pairings from Chef Tom for red meats are either the Chef Tom Douglas Rub With Love Pork Rub or a generous portion of Chef Tom Douglas Rub With Love Chicken Rub.

I have been looking for something a little different to spice my meats with and this does the trick. I have used it on pork chops and chicken, but so far my favorite is using it on chicken quarters with some garlic salt and extra pepper. Let the chicken set overnight and bake in the oven. The spices make the skin of the crust so yummy!

We go through this sauce so quickly and unfortunately no local grocery stores stock it anymore (I check every time I enter a grocery store- it's THAT good!!). It's so great for a dipping sauce, a condiment, an ingredient, etc. Shipping from TeeBop is excellent too. They've always come wrapped so well in bubble wrap it's almost a battle getting all the bottles unwrapped! It's great, and so much better than the "original" version.

As a spice mix fan, I have to give a strong thumbs-up for Chef Tom's Pork Rub. The dominant notes in this mix are cumin, coriander, and chile. This isn't a hot mix per se - if you want to kick things up a notch, I'd recommend adding a dash of cayenne - but it is excellent. Only the two standout mixes that Chef Tom sells: Chef Tom Douglas Rub With Love Salmon Rub and Chef Tom Douglas Rub With Love Chicken Rub are better.
This is best on baby back ribs, lamb chops, and pork roast. I only remove a star because the mix isn't that versatile: it's not particularly suited for spicing up soup, chicken, or fish.

Friends gave us a jar of this as part of a "Taste of the Northwest" gift basket while we were visiting Seattle last year. We eventually tried it, and fell in love with the taste, texture and ease of preparation. You coat the salmon in a bit of the rub, and saute it in a little olive oil. The resulting crust adds a mildly spicy, sweet flavor and a very slight crust to the salmon that my wife and I like better than any other way we've tried salmon. Highly recommended, and we'll be ordering more as we're almost out.

This seasoning is delicious! It is especially good on baked chicken and baby back ribs as a dry rub. It's a nice change from Montreal seasoning for beef and lamb. I even put it in my omelettes. The company doesn't advertise and it's reputation is basically word of mouth, take my word for it, you won't be disappointed. My wife is a great cook but even she admits that Pappy's is her secret weapon for savory meats. No MSG either! While planning a tapas dinner, we sampled an excellent roasted pork tenderloin rubbed with Ras El Hanout, a Moroccan spice mixture of over 30 spices in its most traditional version. Even our local metropolitan spice emporium didn't have it. We were delighted to locate it from this seller on Amazon. A wonderful spice mixture from a vendor who shipped promptly. House shichimi togarashi (7 flavored pepper spice) is a very popular brand of seasoning and this distinct little red glass jar is often found on countertops in ramen shops and izakayas across Japan and the US. It is an excellent spice to sprinkle on top of ramen, fish, grilled chicken skewers, okonomiyaki, and any other food you'd like to add a little fire to.
Shichimi doesn't just bring heat. It adds texture, flavor, and a small amount of added nutrients from the seeds in the mixture. Shichimi in Japan usually contains hemp seed as one of the 7 ingredients, which gives the spice a good crunch. For export to the US, this ingredient has been replaced. Aside from that, this is a true taste of a Japanese favorite.
Be sure to put the cap back on tightly after use so that no moisture gets into the bottle. When that happens, the powdered ingredients will start to stick together and become difficult to shake out of the hole.
