Bull-Dog - Vegetable & Fruit Tonkatsu Sauce 10.1 Fl. Oz. Review

I learned to love Bull Dog Tonkatsu sauce while I was living in Japan. There was a small deli/grill just outside my local train station that sold set meals of tempura and tonkatsu. (For those who may not know, tonkatsu is a breaded, deep fried pork cutlet. The sauce is designed to garnish this delicacy.) I used to pick some up on my way home from work, stamping my feet to keep warm as I trudged up the interminable hill that led to my apartment. I bought this sauce at the local grocery store and kept it on hand for just such occasions!
To the previous reviewer who compared the flavor to that of nutmeg: Bravo! you almost nailed it:) I have a home made version of tonkatsu sauce I cobble together as a clone. It calls for a significant amount of allspice and clove, as well as a generous splash of sake. If you Google for recipes you can experiment yourself, if you're so inclined. But then, the good folks over at Bull Dog may object to my counter productive views--sorry folks! :)
In closing, I want to urge you to visit Japan and try tonkatsu for yourselves! I had a wonderful time during the two years I lived there! Here's a treasure hunt for you: there is a restaurant specializing in tonkatsu to be found on the top floor of the mall that encompasses the bullet train station in Kyoto. Give that place a try for an unbeatable taste of Japanese cuisine; the view is fantastic! I recommend it highly. Bon appetit!:)

S&B - Golden Curry Sauce Mix - Mild 3.5 Oz. Review

SandB - Golden Curry Sauce Mix - Mild 3.5 Oz.

I've tried numerous types of curries from all sorts of different stores - Indian grocers, fancy overpriced grocery stores, spice stores, heck, even Walmart. But of all the different types of curry spice mix I've used over the years to make my vegetable curry, the S&B brand is the best.
Before I moved, I would drive an hour into downtown Pittsburgh to this grungy Asian food store to buy ten of these boxes at a time. However, since I left the area I haven't been able to find any store which sells S&B, so I'm particularly thrilled to see that Amazon has it available.
I know it's weird to get this excited over a spice, but I absolutely LOVE vegetable curry and I make it all the time, so I'm very happy I have a new source to purchase my favorite spice from.
Of course, I should mention that this is a JAPANESE curry blend, not Indian, so if you're looking for more traditional flavored curry, I'm not sure if my review would help. But personally, I think that this spice blend tastes the best. Use your own judgement.

Big Acres Ginger Teriyaki Marinade Review

Big Acres Ginger Teriyaki Marinade

This sauce will change the way you think about BBQ sauce. Once you try it, all the mass market sauces are a thing of the past. Kraft, smaft; Bullseye, smhullseye - these are you new best friend. The Rich & Mild is a fantastic sauce with a great blend of spices, dark molasses and honey. If you like a little heat (in the words of a famous TV chef "Kick it up a notch"), the Hot & Spicy is your sauce. The Chipotle peppers are roasted, so they are not too hot - juuuust enough to add a little heat to the mix. The Teriyaki is a great marinade for quick meals. Just marinade for a 1/2 hour to 1 hour and place on your local BBQ. I heat a few ounces and pour it over the meat just before I serve it. You wont be disappointed!

House - Shichimi Togarashi 0.63 Oz. Review

House - Shichimi Togarashi 0.63 Oz.

House shichimi togarashi (7 flavored pepper spice) is a very popular brand of seasoning and this distinct little red glass jar is often found on countertops in ramen shops and izakayas across Japan and the US. It is an excellent spice to sprinkle on top of ramen, fish, grilled chicken skewers, okonomiyaki, and any other food you'd like to add a little fire to.
Shichimi doesn't just bring heat. It adds texture, flavor, and a small amount of added nutrients from the seeds in the mixture. Shichimi in Japan usually contains hemp seed as one of the 7 ingredients, which gives the spice a good crunch. For export to the US, this ingredient has been replaced. Aside from that, this is a true taste of a Japanese favorite.
Be sure to put the cap back on tightly after use so that no moisture gets into the bottle. When that happens, the powdered ingredients will start to stick together and become difficult to shake out of the hole.
