(More customer reviews)I sampled the marinade at St. Jean winery in CA, bought a bottle ($1 more than at Amazon), and intended to make the chicken salad recipe on the label of the marinade. Eventually I asked my friend Jean, an excellent cook, to make the chicken salad for me. She doubled the recipe, and followed the directions on the bottle exactly. We both thought the result was fabulous. I'll buy it again even though it's on the expensive side. The chicken salad was terrific. It is definitely worthy of serving to company. I love the distictive flavor of this sauce.

(More customer reviews)This stuff is great--it's probably horrible FOR you, in terms of sodium and fats and so forth, but who cares--it sure is delicious. You can't be a health nut every day of the week.
If you like HOT, get the hot, if you prefer mild, get the mild.
In a hurry and need to cook something that tastes like you went to a little trouble? Fry up some good quality meat and a little onion, then dump the whole lot into a pot ---with some firm, fresh vegetables if you'd like (carrot always is good, maybe cauliflower or broccoli, use your creative imagination to add some nice color and texture too), a little water, and the chunks of curry you'll find in the packet (they look like interconnected, moist, giant bullion cubes--use the whole packet, now--yes, the whole thing--for best flavor). While it's simmering away and thickening, fire up the rice cooker and make some nice, fluffy rice, and voila--a meat curry on rice, and people who've never had this stuff will believe you labored over a hot stove for hours.
I first encountered this "sauce" (it's more of a solid than a sauce when you buy it, it becomes a sauce when you cook it) in Japan, many years ago and was delighted that military commissaries carried it all over the world (as well as here in the USA)--the Japanese were mad for it, with good reason--it is incredibly convenient, it is tasty as all get out, and it does the trick if you like a ribsticking "curry gravy" meal in a short amount of time.

(More customer reviews)Patek's is my favorite curry paste--no MSG and simple ingredients. For a great, easy meal on an evening when you are too tired to make a curry from scratch, saute some onions, throw in a can of tomatoes, some water, and a few tablespoons of Patek's Mild Curry Paste, and then you can take it wherever you like it--meat, tofu, veggies--as your fancy strikes you.
Now this paste may say "mild," but there is still enough spice to make your mouth tingle pleasantly--just enough. When I serve Patek's mild, I take out some chicken or whatever before serving to my four-year-old--I don't think she could handle the "mild" spice level. Mom and Dad love it, though.
The downside is that one little jar does not go a long way. If you use the paste in the concentration that it calls for (and I recommend doing so, for an authentic Indian taste), you will get two or three dinners out of it. But for flavor and ease of use and sheer delight, you cannot beat Patek's. The guests you serve it to will be amazed--and you can hide your little jar in the refrig and bask in all that glory.
Amazon's cost is high for this item, at $5, but if convenience is important to you, then that's a consideration--having a powerful culinary secret delivered to your door might make the extra buck or two worth it. If you have time and are near an Asian/Indian foods store, then expect to pay $3 if you are lucky, or around $4 in most places. Stock up, because unopened, these last forever.

(More customer reviews)I've tried numerous types of curries from all sorts of different stores - Indian grocers, fancy overpriced grocery stores, spice stores, heck, even Walmart. But of all the different types of curry spice mix I've used over the years to make my vegetable curry, the S&B brand is the best.
Before I moved, I would drive an hour into downtown Pittsburgh to this grungy Asian food store to buy ten of these boxes at a time. However, since I left the area I haven't been able to find any store which sells S&B, so I'm particularly thrilled to see that Amazon has it available.
I know it's weird to get this excited over a spice, but I absolutely LOVE vegetable curry and I make it all the time, so I'm very happy I have a new source to purchase my favorite spice from.
Of course, I should mention that this is a JAPANESE curry blend, not Indian, so if you're looking for more traditional flavored curry, I'm not sure if my review would help. But personally, I think that this spice blend tastes the best. Use your own judgement.

(More customer reviews)Do you enjoy Indian cooking? This bottled product, Tikka Masala (by Maya Kaimal), isn't bad! I stopped by Williams-Sonoma earlier in the week and couldn't resist trying this. I have had some fine Indian cooking at restaurants with this flavoring.
I used this with chicken, served over Basmati rice. Sautee the chicken, lower the heat, and let simmer with this sauce. Served over rice, this is tasty. You can also use this with lamb or shrimp (sautéed).
What's in the sauce? Ingredients include tomatoes (puree and paste), yogurt, some milk, ginger, garlic, cilantro, pepper, and so on. The end result is a smooth and mildly spicy taste.

(More customer reviews)Patak's Rogan Josh Curry Cooking Sauce is disgusting. I made it for dinner and couldn't force myself to eat more than a few bites. It tasted nothing like Rogan Josh; the texture, color and flavor were all wrong. It didn't even taste like any kind of curry sauce. The jar I purchased indicated "medium", which I expected to indicate the heat/spiciness, but it was mild by any standard. It tasted like warm tomato paste. (I shook the jar, emptied the entire contents into the pan and followed the cooking instructions exactly.) You'll just have to take my word for it that I would not rate a mediocre product with one star; this was a truly dismal eating experience.

(More customer reviews)This is a rich and flavorful curry paste, with lots of subtle undertones. Although it is listed as "hot", it is actually fairly mild in flavor, but with an abundance of spice. This is a great curry to use when you don't have time to grind and mix your own spices.

This curry paste is now my favorite. It is easy to use, store, and best of all it is delicious! Pataks Curry is very mild....not super spicy like many others. My husband likes flavor and a little spice so this is his favorite as well. I can use the one jar for about 4 meals which is a great deal.
I have found that is it so simple to make a "stir-fry" with a protein like tofu, chicken or even salmon and then add veggies such as carrots, or potatoes. There are many combinations and just about any typical veggie taste great in this sauce (love cauliflower). I think it is best kept simple with 2 or 3 ingredients.
This sauce is great for an easy meal with guests, throw the rice in the steamer, make the curry stir-fry, and add another side dish and you are set. Our friends love it!
Pataks also makes other great sauces but this is my favorite to keep on hand at all times.
