(More customer reviews)Are Zatarain's products a taste of New Orleans? I'm no chef and I have no idea. In general, they are plenty spicy and make a nice departure from blander family fare like Hamburger Helper (whose recipes rarely include veggies).
Being a confirmed spice wuss, however, I have to modify the recipe somewhat. You can eat this stuff without adding meat (or soy meat), but I would guess that would taste terrible. In addition to the regular recipe (which requires butter or margarine), I brown and add Jimmy Dean ground sausage with sage, plus some cooked chicken.
To alleviate the spiciness somewhat, I cut the recipe with some Boil-in-a-Bag whole grain brown rice (which painlessly adds some dietary fiber to the meal). If you like veggies, add some of those (I like to put some extra sliced red bell pepper -- adds color!).
What's great about this is you can keep all the ingredients in your pantry except the protein, which you can keep frozen or canned, so you always have this meal ready to go. It's cheap and it's quick and it's filling. Plus, you can make a big batch and stick it in the fridge to eat later, since it reheats well and still tastes good (mayber better), unlike Hamburger Helper meals, which are basically inedible if you don't eat them fresh (I don't mind HH, but let's recognize its limitations).
