Campbell's Condensed Scotch Broth, 10.5-Ounce Cans (Pack of 12) Review

According to Campbell's, Camden, NJ, Headquarter's Customer Service Department, I was told that sales of Campbell's Scotch Broth Soup have been discontinued in the USA.
In the New England region, I first noticed Campbell's Scotch Broth Soup disappearing from grocery store shelves during the Summer of 2010.
I soon learned that, at a 2010 annual Campbell's USA business, sales planning meeting, it was decided to discontinue distributing Campbell's Canadian made soups in the USA, that require higher priced ingredients, thus allowing for higher profit for Campbell's U.S. division.
Instead, for the U.S. market, it was decided to introduce more cheaply produced, U.S. manufactured children's theme soups, (such as Dora the Explorer), which utilize the same, cheap chicken soup base as many of their other soups, so Campbell's could grow profits at a rapid rate, well into the future.
So, you see, Maximum Profit, not popularity, is the actual reason why Scotch Broth, among other products, (such as Pepper Pot Soup), have been discontinued...Profit rules supreme at Campbell's these days. Shame on Campbell's for ruining and discontinuing a once great and complete line of products available in the USA.
But, Canadians can still buy and enjoy Campbell's Scotch Broth because, although no longer available in the USA, Campbell's Scotch Broth is still manufactured and sold in Canada, which you can see when visiting their Canadian website by googling: "campbellsoup.ca"
Why aren't Americans worthy of Campbell's better quality soups, such as Scotch Broth?

Progresso Traditional Soup, Roasted Chicken with Garlic, 18.5-Ounce (Pack of 6) Review

Progresso Traditional Soup, Roasted Chicken with Garlic, 18.5-Ounce (Pack of 6)

This isn't the greatest Progresso soup I've had. It does have a huge amount of solid ingredients in it, which is great. Unfortunately the broth and the flavor are not as strong as I would have liked given the fact that it's supposed to be "roasted chicken with garlic." The garlic is what I was really hoping for, but it wasn't a very discernible flavor in my bowl. As you can see from the photo on the can and the photo I uploaded, this soup comes with chicken, penne, green beans, corn, tomato, and carrots. The vegetables did come out a little on the mushy side when I had it, microwaved at 3 minutes in a 1000-watt unit (the directions recommend 2-4 minutes), while the penne was just a little firm but in better shape than the veggies. The chicken doesn't look incredibly appetizing (it looks like it's been sitting in some broth in a can, frankly), but it tasted fine and the texture was normal. Overall it was a decent-tasting soup and it did its job of filling me up; you gotta love Progresso and the ridiculous amount of food they can fit into these cans. The broth did leave an unpleasantly-firm ring of color around the bowl as I continued eating. Nothing that wasn't easy to wash off, but just...you know...that's what you're eating, is all.
Not a bad soup, but not a great one. You could do better with Progresso than this one.

Progresso's chicken gumbo soup doesn't taste all that great when it comes out of the microwave (or off the stove, if that's your way), but it tastes pretty good. It has white meat chicken, kidney beans, okra, rice, celery, carrot, tomato, and red bell pepper in it, as you can see from the picture on the can. Check the picture I uploaded to see what the soup *actually* looks like in the bowl. The chicken was pretty firm and just right, in my bowl. The gumbo taste isn't bad. You won't feel like you're in Louisiana or Memphis while you're eating it (unless you're actually IN Louisiana or Memphis), but it has the distinctive gumbo taste and is really quite good compared to some of Progresso's other soups. My biggest complaint with this soup is that the green vegetables came out mushy, as they tend to with Progresso soups, I've found. The celery and okra were good, just very soft and mushy, which isn't really what I wanted. It did a pretty good job of filling me up, though, as they pack a whole lot into that can as always. Overall a good soup that I wouldn't mind buying more of if I see it on the shelves sometime.

Short of making homemade soup, this is as good a soup as you can hope for out of the can. The broth is wonderful to sip on and has just the right amount of chili powder and cumin to make it truly enjoyable. As typical with all canned soups, there is nowhere near enough meat in it, but that aside, this is a top-notch soup! And by the way, the new Weight Watchers Points Plus calculates to almost 2 points per serving, or 4 points for the whole can.

This is a very nice soup for those watching calories and wanting a scosh less salt than is usual for Campbell's soups. It's a tomato-based soup with a light dose of rice, black beans, and chicken. It's not thick or chunky. I'd call it a medium-density soup. Enough broth to slurp for those who like a not-stewish soup. Not super hot or spicy, but flavorful all the same.
I find that it's very nice on its own, but I prefer it with more black beans (I just add canned ones) and chopped tomato and a sprinkle of low-fat cheddar cheese. That really makes it into a nice light meal, satisfying and flavorful.
But I think if you like tomato-based soups and a Mexican vibe, this will agree with your taste buds. I consider it a pantry staple for lunch now.
I do find the regular cans of this tastes slightly better. Maybe heating it in the can transfers some of the metal taste. Not sure. But if you can find the regular cans, I'd go that route.
One cup has 130 calories, 3 grams of fiber, 8 grams of protein, 20 grams of carbohydrates, 2.5 grams of fat ( 1 gram of those is of saturated fat.) It also has 480mg of sodium, and 800 of potassium. I add the low-fat (or fat free) cheese for both flavor and to up the protein to balance the carbs.
I hope Campbell's keeps making these. Nice quickie soup.
