(More customer reviews)After switching my cats from Iams to Castor & Pollux, we decided that it was the dog's turn. Our three medium sized dogs (all around 45lbs) had been eating Iams Lamb Meal & Rice Formula for about 3 years. Even though Iams is considered a premium food, our concerns were:
(1) the third ingredient is corn meal and one of the proteins is chicken by-product meal (Chicken by-product meal consists of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice).
(2) Our dogs were putting on weight despite the fact that they are active dogs, and
(3) An olfactory-related concern - when resting, the dogs passed gas - a lot of gas!

The gas got us. Even though Castor & Pollux is a more expensive dog food, we decided that it was worth a try. Forty-five pounds of dog food later, I'm happy that we switched because the dogs love the food, their coats are healthy, they are slimming down with no loss of energy, and, best of all, the gas issue is no longer an issue.
Since this information isn't listed on the Amazon product page, and since ingredients are a main consideration when purchasing pet food, Castor& Pollux Canine Weight Management ingredients are (from the back of the bag):

(More customer reviews)Bought this food locally in the smallest size - we have two chihuahuas and they are pretty picky eaters. They normally have a wet/dry combination of food but with this stuff they eat it dry no problem. We try to include as much organic into our diets as possible and it made sense to do the same with the dogs, plus this stuff is made in the USA (not in Canada which apparently has less strict regulations for dog food - which is where the Newman's own brand is made, I've been told.) One of the dogs has a pretty sensitive stomach so it's hard to find a food that we can consistently purchase that doesn't make her sick. The small size bites are perfect for our dogs, which is really nice too. Remember when introducing your dog to a new food, it's best to start combining it with their old food.

This food is EXCELLENT! He has had a noticeable increase in energy, he is more responsive, he eats his food (has an appetite) and this food has none of the bad ingredients you are supposed to stay away from. You know how their stools get loose when you switch their food? That never even happened with this food!

I feed my 11 year old German Shepard, and my two year old Pittie Girl this food every day, and the benefits are astounding. For most of my Shepards life I fed her a well known, vet recommended food, and yet she always had stomach problems. Trying many things, it was not until I rescued, and I should really say she rescued me, and the dog food recall, that I began doing research on brands of food. After a long investigation, I decided on Newman's Own, not only because there had been no recall on the food, but because of the ingredients, and that the proceeds going to charity. Now, choosing this brand, would mean that I would have to order it online, because my local stores did not carry it, but that was all right with me, because not only do I enjoy online ordering, but I am an older, disabled woman, and getting to the store and hauling in packages is very hard for me. Well, I want to tell you, My 11 year old thrives on this food, with no more digestive issues, and a beautiful white coat, and she loves eating it with vigor. My two year old American Pit Bull Terrier, another love of my life, also thrives on this food, has the most beautiful shiny coat ever, and people say all the time how beautiful her coat is. I do spoil my fur kids, but their health and well being is my number one priority. I have just recently switched over feeding my 4 cats Newman's Own cat food, both dry and canned food, and since then, I have noticed the difference in the elimination of hair balls. I know that I am truly a pet lover, but I believe that if you love your pets and want only the best well being for them, unnecessary medical issues, and all around good health, a good balanced, safe, natural food is the way to go. I highly recommend Newman's Own dog and cat food. I also feed my two dogs Newman's Own biscuits as treats.

Initially i had started my new pup on IAMS because of its popularity - but after reading the ingredient list and hearing the the IAMS corporation had just been sold (therefore not keeping the quality of their product) I decided I needed to provide my hound with a heathier source of nutrition.
I volunteer at the local Human Society Shelter and a friend of mine there suggested that I try "Canidae". At first I was hesitant because of the cost - but when i read the nutrition facts and saw REAL, all natural ingredients, i felt confident enough that the price was worth it.
Before i started feeding my bassett Canidae he would only eat once a day (placing a full bowl of food down for him in the early morning on my way to work...he would wait until late at night to eat AFTER I had my dinner and slowly munch on a couple bits here and there). The first morning i put Canidae in his dish (at 5:30am) he scarfed the entire bowl down in a matter of minutes!!!!! It was such a relief to know that my dog was actually enjoying his food.
Now i feed him once in the morning and once at night and he eats every bit as soon as I put it down everytime. Occasionally I will cook up some frozen vegetables with an egg and mix it in his food for a little variety, but I havent had to do that in a while.
If you love your dog and care about his/her nutrition, I suggest giving Canidae a try.

(More customer reviews)Our dog is crazy for these Gourmet treats. They come in various combinations of flavors including carrots, apple, sweet potato and chicken. Packages are zip locked and have a small stay-fresh insert to keep the treats moist. They are small, maybe the size of your thumb, and they're chewy and smell pretty good, unlike other dog treats we've tried. I am not happy with the pricetag on these goodies, however, and finding them in stores is hard to come by. Buying them online is costly enough but then adding the shipping fee puts the purchase way over the top for a simple dog treat. If they would come out with bulk package, I'd justify the higher price tag, but this sized bag is just a rip off.

(More customer reviews)My doggie really likes Newman's Organic better than some other dog foods pet and big-box stores sell. My budget doesn't like Newman's Organic as much as Harmony Farms. It's the compromise that keeps the doggie AND my budget happy. Because he eats it heartily, I don't worry that he's getting enough high quality food. Otherwise he won't eat his food and he'll graze in the trash seeking egg shells and bones to fill the void.
There's no barfing, digestion problems or accidents. High Quality food means good digestion, a shiny coat, high energy, bright eyes and a good attitude WITHOUT tons of additional elixers, treats or vet bills. A definite cost effective WIN:WIN for doggie AND me.
I've had great results with Newman's Dog Food that I orderd through Amazon BUT there's 5 pounds LESS for about the same price.
Psst I'm not an organic fanatic, it's the nutritional value that counts for my fur baby and human kids!

He's rejected just about every dry dog food we've tried to give him since he was a puppy, and we've had to cook his meals for him daily. He also has food allergies, so we're careful about what kinds of food we give him. When we had to travel out of town for several days, we needed a solution, and happened upon Spot's Stew (both canned and dry). He loves it! We still cook for our spoiled boy, but we can now supplement his diet with a quality dry food that has the nutrients he needs. I wish it were less expensive, but our fur-baby is worth it even at double the price.

Castor & Pollux Organix Adult Canine Formula Dry Dog Food Review

(More customer reviews)I fed this to my dogs for about 4 years. At the time I believed this to be the best food on the market. I didn't however know that it was so high in grains. The first ingredient is chicken, but it is weighed prior to being cooked. After processing, it only maintains 20-25% of its original weight. Were it to be weighed after dehydration, it would be much further down the ingredient hierarchy. My vet told me my dog's dry skin and lack of fur sheen was likely due to the high grain content of his food and insufficent Omega-3's in his diet. After calling C&P I was suprised to learn that the Omega-3 levels are only 0.28%, which is significantly lower than many other premium foods.
I have since switched to Orijen brand 6-Fish dog food. The Omega-3's are 4 times higher and the Glucosamine/Chondroitin levels approximately 10 times higher. All the fish are wild-caught in Canadian waters, never frozen, delivered daily, and are from species that retain little or no Mercury or PCB's in their tissue. My dog has since stopped scratching and has developed a vibrant, glossy coat. He is also much more energetic, which really alarmed me at first.
I don't believe C&P to be a bad food, but I believe that there are much better foods out there. Dog Food Analysis, a non-bias food review site, only rates the C&P(Ultramix and Organix) at 4 out of 6 stars. The only food brands to earn their 6 star rating were Orijen, Evo, Instinct, and Taste of the Wild. I made my final decision by comparing the ingredients.
If price is not a concern for you, then I'd encourage you to try the Orijen.
