(More customer reviews)My 13ish yr old cat was recently diagnosed with some form of liver disease - (he adopted me 3 yrs ago when I got married since he was my husband's) and wasn't eating very much - some roasted turkey meat and some cheese (he is normally fed canned cat food) not even his favorite Fancy Feast was enticing. The Vet recommended Science Diet Hills AD and my cat barely touched it. So I went shopping for anything he would eat since he HAS to gain some weight and came across BG cans sitting in the aisle waiting to be stocked/shelved. I was amazed at the plain ingredients and figured I would give it a try - I bought the turkey, the chicken and the quail (I wish there was rabbit) but he devoured the turkey - the entire can! later on he had the chicken and this morning he had quail for the first time in his life and ate half the can :D so far things are looking great! He is taking his meds as well so we have hope. I will update this review in the next week or so.

update April 2010: He still eats these and the dry version and also Innova's EVO Turkey and Chicken combo & the Beef (both dry and canned). He has maintained his weight but recent blood work says he is on *borrowed time* and the thoough meds have helped (Predisone and Denosyl) w/o eating, no meds would have kept him alive and happy for this long so TYVM Before Grain and Innova EVO! Btw, he also devours unseasoned grilled london broil that I chop up in the blender for him (since cats don't really chew, this is easier for his digestion) it is slightly extra work, but he is worth it.

(More customer reviews)THE SHORT VERSION: My picky cats took to this immediately and it seems to have helped them with their digestive (throwing up) issues. The ingredients are much healthier than the standard "animal by-products" found in even the pricier pet food brands (IAMS, Pedigree, Fancy Feast, etc.). Even though it's a little more expensive, I think it's worth it. This company also makes a similar product for dogs that is packaged in a similar-looking bag, so make sure you get the correct stuff.
Now for the longer version...
PRO:
(1) Healthier for the cats! No scary bits-and-pieces-by-products ingredients! Many pet food brands - many "premium" pet-food brands have the exact same disgusting ingredients as el cheapo store brands, but charge you three times the price and give you the false idea that you're feeding your pets well.
(2) Small pieces -- my cats don't seem to like the bigger kibble sizes. The dog food version of this has much larger pieces with little peas/carrots mixed in.
(3) Nice packaging -- I like these plastic bags much more than the standard paper bags (that often tear) and the cardboard boxes (that are easily dumped by the cats). Plus, if the water dish gets knocked over, it won't soak through the bag and make the food soggy and gross.
(4) Did I mention healthier for the pets? Seriously, everyone should find out what's in standard pet food, because it's completely disgusting and in no way safe or healthy for pets. While I won't be eating my pets' food any time soon, at least with Halo I know that (technically) I probably could. And if I had little kids running around, I'd rather have a brand of pet food like this around in case curious kids decide to taste it.
CON:
(1) Harder to find -- I have been purchasing this from my local organic store. I have not seen it carried at any other grocery/drugstore and I live in a fairly large metropolitan area. It may be carried at a PETCO/other pet chain, but the last time I went into a big pet box store, there were NO healthy cat foods. Everything had byproducts and gross stuff. So I haven't been back to one of those to check for HALO. Since PETCO apparently carries it online now, they are probably carrying it in the stores as well. But it doesn't seem to be any cheaper there than at my organic store, so I'll stick to the local store. Speaking of price...
(2) Cost -- It's not a ridiculous price and is certainly worth it when you compare ingredients, but it's hard to get other family/friends to buy good stuff for their own pets when they can pick up el cheapo pet food for a buck or two. I'm trying to find it online for a little cheaper, but so far (once S+H is factored), haven't found it yet. I'd also like to buy it in bulk, but haven't found that yet either.
MINOR ANNOYANCE:
The Bag Design - HALO carries wet and dry food for cats and dogs. They also seem to carry the same flavor for each animal - for instance, there is Wild Salmon Cat Food and Wild Salmon Dog Food. Now, the first time I buy a new food brand for the cats, I do exactly what I do for myself: I turn the package over and read the description and all the ingredients before buying. When I go to buy more, I don't usually read it. So I just grabbed the pink bag that said HALO and Spot's Stew - Wild Salmon. When I dumped some of the food into my cats' bowl, the kibbles were about twice the size and also had little peas and carrots in it. I thought that was weird, but assumed they had changed the packaging. Then when I put the bag back into the cabinet, I noticed something - in the picture on the front of the bag, the woman was holding a dog. Not a cat. And of course, then I read it, saw that it saw DOG FOOD, and felt kind of silly. But you know, pink bag, watercolor-like picture of woman with an animal, had the correct flavor and brand...anyway, the cats were not really that interested in the dog food, but they ate about a bowl or so and also had wet food until I could get back to the organic store for cat food. Luckily, I had someone to give the dog food to so it didn't go to waste. If you're buying this, make sure it says cat food. The bags are similar and if you're in a hurry and not paying attention, you might end up with the wrong stuff.
Apparently Ellen Degeneres is a co-owner of this company, which is cool, I guess, so if you need a celebrity thumbs-up before you buy anything, you've got at least one!

(More customer reviews)After a terrible accident killed one of my two cats, I got very concerned about her surviving sister's well-being. Call it obsessive, but I started reading books on cat first aid and cat health and nutrition, and one day I was filling her food bowl and I happened to glance at the ingredients in her dry cat food. It was then that I realized that the dry food I was feeding her was JUNK! No nutritive value at all! (She was eating Meow Mix, because she seemed to like it, but not anymore.)
Cats don't need cornmeal or veggies or soy or "natural flavoring" (by the way, I found out that most pet products are "naturally flavored" with manure...that's right, MANURE). Cats don't need fish flavored cereal. They need high quality protein, plain and simple. And this is probably the best stuff I've ever found. No grains, no by-products, all natural, and my cat loves the stuff.
Before I started her on this food, she was sedentary and overweight, and she was throwing up a lot. I always thought it was hair balls, but really I think it was her diet. Since I switched her to this diet, she seems to have a lot more energy, she runs around and plays a lot more, she's lost weight, her coat has gotten shinier and silkier, her eyes have cleared up, and she never throws up anymore.
It's a lot more expensive than other kinds of dry cat food, but really, you wouldn't feed your kids junk food with no nutritive value just because it's cheaper, so why would you feed junk to your pets? I honestly think it's worth the price. It's a great product, and I think I'll be feeding it to my cats for many years to come.

My cat absolutely LOVES this stuff! As soon as it arrived, I opened a can of it, just to see what it smelled like. THIS STUFF SMELLS FINE! I think that is smells BETTER than most cans of cat food that I have opened. It does NOT stink-up my house at all.

Prior to Natural Balance, the only way we could get our cats to eat dry food was to mix it with warm water and a half can of canned cat food, usually Iams or Friskies when money was low. Our local feed store recommended Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance as a healthy and tasty alternative. Our adult cats love it...no more "hunger strikes" holding out for canned food. Until trying this, the only food my cat could tolerate was prescription Iams Low Residue. With any other food he would vomit every day and have frequent bouts of diarrhea. Even with the Iams, the poor little guy would have the diarrhea every few days. Then I tried Organix. I went through two 6 lb bags and never had a single incident of illness. It is absolutely unbelievable. Of course when you read the label you can see why it's so different. I will never feed my cat anything else. Truly amazing.

A friend suggested I use Spot's Stew and Wellness dried food and I can't believe it, it worked. AFter I don't know, maybe 6 mos., my 20-lb female is 17 pounds and 20-lb male is 17.8 lbs. They are 10 years old and I am trying to prevent diabetes and wanted to get the weight off. Feeding the stew twice a day - 2 TBSP. each cat - but the boy steals from the girl. And a total of 1 cup wellness. It is not a lot of food for such large cats, but they seem happy and very healthy with shiny coats. Actually, my female has started perching again on high places that she stopped jumping too with the added weight and my male has been more active. I am not listening to my vets anymore when it comes to diets. Although the food is expensive, it is worth it, just to see the activity level pick-up.

(More customer reviews)I didn't know anything about cat food until my two older cats, male and female, started barfing all over the place. And the female started getting skinnier and weaker until it was obvious she was starving to death. I tried every food in the store and nothing seemed to work for them, although the younger cats were ok. A person I knew on a hobby forum told me that cats are carnivores, they're supposed to eat meat, and most cat foods are junk -- wheat, corn and rice meal, very little protein let alone animal-based protein and he recommended Felidae.
I went to their website (canidae.com) and read a ton of testimonials from people saying their cats (or dogs) were in terrible shape and the food literally cured them--meaning the reason they were sick is because their food sucked. It seemed a little too good to be true to me. I took my female cat to the vet and he told me he could put her on medication, that her internal organs were sluggish etc., and I asked him plainly if the cat food could relate and he said "definitely." So I got some felidae.
My cats ate less of this-- as it is much higher protein (animals just like humans naturally eat a lot less on high protein diets) -- so the fact that it is expensive is less an issue, plus there's less litterbox result. It was AMAZING. All the funky bumps on her and her over-sensitivity near her tail and seeming joint pain went away, her fur got thicker and lusher, she gained weight until she was normal sized, and the same happened even for others of my 8 cats that I had not considered ill at all! I guess I didn't know that their fur could be more lush or they could seem healthier until it happened. I gave some to my friend for her barfing older cat and she reported the same thing--it made a huge difference in the cat's life.
If you can find a local pet store that carries this stuff it's a lot cheaper since you won't have to pay shipping. But if all else fails or you just aren't sure, just try some from amazon at first. I think you'll be glad you did. I know your cat will be glad!
As a last note, my cats were not fond of the taste of the Felidae dry for some reason and didn't want to eat it, so I only post this in regards to the Felidae wet food. In talking about this online I have had many people tell me Innova EVO cat food dry (which amazon also carries) was pretty good for their cat as well.

(More customer reviews)I have yet to find a superior dry cat food. I prefer to feed my cat a raw diet, but sometimes it isn't possible. An apartment doesn't have a place for an extra freezer so unfortunately a raw diet isn't feasible. This food is the closest to a raw diet you can get in a dry kibble. NO GRAIN and all meat proteins, exactly how cats want it. And like other reviewers commented, cats LOVE it. My cat always runs hopefully to his CORE storage bin when I start to open it and cries and begs until it is on his dish. My cat's coat is glossy, thick, healthy and barely sheds. His eyes are clear and bright. He has tons of energy and every year his vet is impressed with how healthy he is. No digestive problems, and no kidney problems that are so common in cats fed grain cat food.
I strongly recommend this cat food!
