I bought this mill after much trial and error with off-the shelf, all-in-one disposable mills. None of them could achieve the pepper output capacity that I was seeking. I use copious amounts of pepper in and on many dishes so it was to my benefit to find a mill that could keep up with my needs. I briefly entertained the idea of attaching a standard twist mill to the end of a cordless drill for maximum pepper output, but the logistics and challenge of storage vs. daily use outweighed that desire.
Back to the drawing board, I perused all of the online outlets for my elusive pepper grail. The criteria were simple, yet surprisingly hard to find in one device(in order of importance):
- High peppercorn capacity
- High output grind capability
- Easy to adjust grind size
- Easy to fill
- Aesthetically pleasing
The "run-of-the-mill" (ha, I made a joke) grinders would have 2 or 3 of my criteria, but never more. Battery powered mills did not do it for me due to their heft, noise and just the simple fact that I think a pepper mill should remain a simple mechanical device (K.I.S.S.). Standard, twist-top mills would offer high capacity without the high output and a varying range of grinding materials from plastic (that engineer should be smacked with a cane), to stainless steel (a bit better, but still a bit "off"), brass (close to SS), and finally ceramic, which in my opinion offers the most consistent grind.
I was browsing through an antique store when I came across an old coffee grinder that sported a wooden body with brass mechanics and a hand crank at the top. It was one of those "DING" light bulb moments of epiphany (anyone that watches "House, M.D." will know to what I am referring. Why not adapt a hand crank to a standard pepper mill for the high-output option when necessary?
After a few failed interwebs searches, I stumbled across this gem in my local Kitchen Collection store. Right away I knew I had found the "Zen" of pepper grinders. There is the sliding hatch on the top for ease of loading (no more dis-assembly of the mill for re-loads), High-impact polycarbonate clear body for visual inspection of pepper levels, Ceramic grinding teeth for consistent and sustained pepper output, the top adjuster knob offers the pepper technician a user-friendly interface for grind adjustment and finally, the output mechanism. It offers the pepper enthusiast an option of low-speed, controlled output with a standard twist of the top section, or flip open the hand crank and the mill shifts flawlessly to high-output mode with maximum grind speed only limited by how fast you can turn the crank. For those pepper addicts such as myself, I highly suggest investing in one of those hand-strengthening putty balls used by rock climbers to achieve maximum pepper output in minimal time.
Well, that is my lengthy, but hopefully useful and entertaining review. To put it simply, this grinder rocks in every way I could have hoped for. I sincerely hope it performs as well for you and I hope this review helped you.
