I'm always skittish of instant mac & cheese meals. Not only are they usually full of fattening stuff, but they tend to not be as good as the types you make at home. However, with my schedule & finances I usually tend to go for whatever is on sale & whatever is easiest & quickest to make on my 30 minute lunch breaks.
I've never really tried any of the mac & cheese cups put out by Velveeta, but the idea of a broccoli mix was just too interesting to pass up. How fresh would the broccoli taste? How would the cup flavor? How fast would it be to make?
With some of the other noodle products I've had, all you have to do is soak the noodles in extremely hot water for 3 minutes & they're ready (rather than microwaving for 3 minutes), so I assumed that this would be the same for the Velveeta brand as well. I discovered that this wasn't the case, so I had to actually pop the cup into the microwave for the full three minutes in order to fully cook the noodles. I know that others might try the same thing I did, so I wanted to be sure to point out that you absolutely have to have a microwave in order to make this.
Once out, the noodles were nice & tender, plus I was impressed by how fresh the broccoli looked. (The broccoli was in dried & in a pouch I had to add to the noodles before microwaving.) After adding in the cheese pouch (which is NOT powder- YAY!) & letting it sit for a minute to thicken, the cup was ready to eat. So easiness factor is pretty good, once I realized that there was no getting around the microwaving part.
Taste-wise, this product is nice. There aren't any big chunks of broccoli in the product, but there was enough that I definitely got a broccoli taste from it. Since the cheese was actual Velveeta cheese product & not powdered, the cup was much creamier & tasted better than many of the other products I've had previously.
Why the 4 stars? Because I couldn't help but wish that the broccoli chunks were a bit bigger- they were little more than sprigs & an accent than an actual part of the meal. Plus as far as nutritional value goes, it isn't the healthiest choice out there. Sure, there's broccoli but not enough of it to really make a difference health-wise & certainly not enough to count as an actual serving of veggies. Plus it won't be enough for many eaters, so they'll have to add on other sides in order to feel full, which will make for more calories & sodium added to the meal.
