I have two yellow labs that have been very healthy over their ten years of life, excluding the fatty tumors and hip problem the bred is prone to. In August, 2010 I purchased these treats at Sam's Club. I try never to buy dog treats made in China, but somehow these slipped by me. Also this was the first time I had bought a pork treat. The dogs had a few of the treats from the bag over the next month. They started having loose stools and eventually one dog began vomiting. I brought him to the vet and they prescribed antibiotics. The other dog seemed fine until one night, he started heavy breathing and wouldn't stop. He kept coming in and waking us up. We tried letting him out, but eventually realized he was in distress and brought him to the emergency clinic at 2:30 a.m. They treated him for pain and recommended chest X-rays and blood work. By then, it was almost morning, so we moved the dog to our own vet.
After blood tests and further examinations, both dogs were diagnosed with pancreatitis. They had to be hospitalized and put on IVs for 3 days to allow the pancreas to heal. Currently they are on antibiotics, pain killers, and stomach medicine. They go back for another blood test for pancreatic levels on Monday. For a month, they can have no treats and hereafter, they must be on a low-fat diet. As you can imagine, the treatment has been quite expensive. The dogs have no energy and one still is barely eating. They are both weak.
Working with the vet, we reviewed everything the dogs had been eating. He was positive they had gotten into something. This was the only change to their diet we could identify.
We are shocked and heartbroken at all the distress our poor dogs have suffered. I hope that they continue to heal and that this does not lead to more serious problems. I just want everyone to know that dogs are extremely prone to pancreatitis and should not have high fat treats. A quick look at this bag is very misleading. It reports the maximum of most items, but only the minimum on crude fat. The minimum listed is 5.5%. You don't learn what the true amount of fat is. Also it says you can serve one treat per day. It does have a disclaimer that you should ask your vet about using them with older dogs.
I don't know if being made in China is the problem or the amount of fat in the treat, or something else. I just want to warn other people, so they don't end up with their dogs seriously ill.

This company sells chicken jerky strips for dogs from China. Their website does not indicate that the products are from China. The US Food and Drug Administration advises that no one should buy dog food products from China because many dogs have died from them. I would not have purchased from this company had I known they sell dog food products from China.

It was not specified on this site and I did not know until I received the product. This is something that should be clear on the product page especially since the FDA has specifically warned about chicken jerky products for pets that are made in China. I am going to ask for a refund.

Dogswell Mellow Mut for Dogs, Chicken Breast, Chamomile & Lavender, 5-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 6) Review

We originally bought this brand due to the claim that it uses "All Natural Cage Free Chickens" as well as the "No Hormones" and "No Antibiotics," etc. But the items were surprisingly better in quality than the package claimed. These strips are real strips of dried chicken, not just processed "meats" as some companies may use. This particular flavor became our household favorite due to the effect it has on our easliy excited black lab, Hayden.
At first I thought the ingredients were just light flavoring, since all of the packages seem to contain the exact same looking treats. But, the smell is very strong. This flavor contains chamomile and lavender - which claims to calm your dog. This claim is very true for our dog. Only after a couple of nights, we noticed a considerable difference in behavior for Hayden. Our dog usually gets wound up in the evening time and continually wants to play even right before we go to bed. After giving Hayden six strips, which is the suggested amount for his body size, he became docile and even sleepy before our bed time.
I usually don't believe the statements that most products like this claim, but I can say we have noticed a big difference. Granted the effect is short term and can't be predicted for really young dogs or "unfixed" dogs (for comparison our dog Hayden weighs 85 lbs, is 6 years old, and has been fixed).
These are the draw backs though. 1) This is an expensive way to treat large dogs EVERY DAY, so maybe not realistic for everyone. 2) The effects may only last a few hours, so overly exciteable dogs may be able to "battle through" the effects. 3) Flavor is very strong and very odd (lavender?) some pickier dogs could turn their noses up to the smell and flavor of these treats.
Just a note - Dogswell Happy Heart Chicken Breast, Flax Seed & Taurine, 3-Count 16-Ounce Bags seems to have the opposite effect on our dog. This product contains taurine - like Redbull - so maybe that's the reason. I'd recommend that Happy Heart flavored treats should be avoided late in the evening.

Waggin Train Chicken Jerky Tenders Dog Treats - 48oz. Bag Review

This post is in response to the death of my dog Chelsea. My dog was a healthy border collie mix. She had shown no signs of any illness until one night I come home to find her lethargic at the bottom of the stairs. She could not move or stand up. Thankfully we have a 24 hour vet nearby. She was taken immediately and given a check up and had blood work done. The blood work came back with high spikes in her liver enzymes which the vet said was due to something that she ingested. The only thing that that had been introduced to her diet recently was Waggin Train chicken jerky treats. I had been feeding them to my dog for a few months (she loved them). I immediately stopped feeding her the treats. After being off the treats for a week she had another round of blood work and her liver enzymes started to return to normal. We had 1 more round of blood scheduled in 2 weeks to make sure that her liver has returned to normal. But unfortunately Chelsea did not live that long. I woke up on the morning of May 30th to her having a Gran Mal Seizure due to high toxin levels and she died in my arms. After her death I started researching Waggin Train Jerky treats and was amazed to find the large number of people that had posted instances of illness or death of their pet and they felt very strongly that the treats contributed to the illness or death. The FDA has issued an advisory concerning the feeding of chicken jerky products from China. Based on the fact that my dog had high liver enzymes and the vet attributed it to her ingesting something toxic and the fact that her liver enzymes started to return to normal after I stopped feeding her the treats I believe that the Waggin Train chicken jerky treats that I had been feeding her contributed to her death. I am not saying that every treat or every bag is dangerous but with them coming from China you never know what was added to them in the Chinese facility. My suggestion, stay away from them and you will also stay away from a $1000.00 vet bill like I had as well as the loss of a pet. JUST BEWARE. If you have experienced similar problems pass the word around. You can also file a complaint with the FDA. My suggestion is to do your own research, just Google waggin train jerky illness. You can read comments from other pet owners and make you own decision as to whether you want to feed this brand of treat or any other that is imported from China to your pet. I am posting this in memory of my beloved Chelsea and hope that the post will help to save the life of other pets. As consumers we should be able to question the safety of a product if we feel that it has caused harm. After my first post a friend that Lives in Las Vegas said that they had given their dog these treats and their dog had bloody diarrhea so they stopped feeding their dog the treats and their dogs bowels returned to normal.

My beagle absolutely loves these, but we think they may have gotten him sick. He started having diarrhea, which stopped when he went on an exclusive chicken and rice diet. Once he was better, we stayed with the same diet, but gave him a tiny bit of the chicken treat (because we thought it was healthy -- it's just chicken, right?). The diarrhea was back almost immediately. After the Walmart recall this week of a different brand of chicken strips, I'm scared to give these to him anymore. I don't care it's irradiated or not, something's not right with this food. Chicken is a hard meat to process -- lots of bacteria. I'd rather be safe with food from a responsible, high-end, organic pet food company than risk my dog's health with this product.
