Happy Family Happy Bites - Mac & Cheese, 8-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 6) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)First off, let it be known that I would never pay this price for the product. I happen to subscribe to an organic food home delivery service in my area, and the owner of the company does not normally stock these, but she arranged to obtain a few cases of these for me AT COST, which makes these within our price range. Otherwise, Amazon is absorbing the cost of the shipping (they are frozen, so have to ship 1 day on dry ice) and passing it along to you with a higher product cost for the "free shipping" designation. Check out the Happy Family website to see that these retail for $[...]/box (6 boxes/case)
There are three "patties" per package of the veggie tots and mac n' cheese tots. Each "patty" is about 1/2-2/3 size of a Gardenburger patty or similar. They contain approx. 160 calories each. One of these plus a small side constitutes a meal for most toddlers-- maybe two patties and a side for the 4+ set.
My son, now 13 months, is at that "I do it myself" phase where he mostly resists us feeding him a meal now. As he is not terribly good with a spoon yet (maybe 1/4 actually gets in his mouth), finger foods are a necessity for every meal now.
These serve that purpose. They are tasty enough-- I'd say that "real" Annie's mac n' cheese tastes a little better, but for those that can't/won't use a fork or spoon yet, these are pretty close to the real thing. "Hidden veggies" make them a little better than standard mac n' cheese. Of course, for our family, the "organic" designation is a must, and you will find that these are really the only option I have found for organic "toddler" food. As in, when your kid is past baby food purees, but not quite ready to eat an a piece of chicken breast and corn on the cob or similar. Also handy for if you are going out to eat and your child is not yet ready to order off the kid's menu yet.
Taste-- yum. Not double yum, but yum enough. My son likes them, I thought they were okay.
Preparation-- easy peasy. Microwave or toaste oven. Simple, no thought involved.
Storage-- well, since they are frozen, it's easy enough, but they don't really "travel" well as a result. At home or for very short trips when we are going somewhere with refrigeration and food prep facilities. Not meant for, say, the day at the amusement park.
Packaging-- bit wasteful, if you ask me. Funny, because the "secret agent" animal on the box supposedly dislikes wasting paper. There are three patties to a box, and this means the cardboard box is 1/2 empty. I think they could stand to package them 5 or 6 to a box and increase the price per unit. This would probably bring the shipping costs down too.
So all in all, this is a good product, but it has next to no competition, as I haven't been able to find "solid" (i.e. not puree) toddler food on the market where we live. These are also not available where I live, but my son loves all the other Happy Family products, so we looked into buying them from the manufacturer or via Amazon-- ha! we'd have to sell our kidneys to afford them. If you can buy them retail at a store near you, then they are absolutely worth a try, but I would NOT buy them this way. Since I am basing my star rating on the product, not the cost, they still garner 4 stars.
